iPhone Privacy Configuration: The Complete 2026 Guide

beginnerBy OPV Editorial||12 min read

Apple markets the iPhone as a privacy-focused device, but the default settings still collect significant data. This guide walks through every privacy-relevant setting on iOS, from App Tracking Transparency to Siri data collection to location services granularity. Following all steps reduces your data exposure significantly while maintaining full device functionality.

Prerequisites

  • iPhone running iOS 17 or later
  • 15-20 minutes for complete configuration
  • Understanding that some features will be reduced by privacy settings
1

Disable App Tracking Transparency Globally

Go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Tracking, and toggle off Allow Apps to Request to Track. This prevents all apps from requesting permission to track you across other companies apps and websites using your IDFA advertising identifier. This is the single most impactful privacy setting on iOS and should be your first change.

Tip: If you already allowed some apps to track, review the list on this screen and disable tracking for each individually.

2

Configure Location Services

Go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services. Review each app and change from Always to While Using the App or Ask Next Time for all except critical navigation apps. Scroll to the bottom and tap System Services to disable Location-Based Apple Ads, Location-Based Suggestions, and Significant Locations. Keep Find My iPhone enabled for security.

3

Disable Siri Data Collection

Go to Settings, Siri and Search. Toggle off Listen for Hey Siri and Press Side Button for Siri if you do not use Siri. If you use Siri, go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Analytics and Improvements, and toggle off Improve Siri and Dictation. This prevents your voice recordings from being reviewed by Apple contractors for quality improvement.

4

Lock Down Safari Privacy

Go to Settings, Safari. Enable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, Hide IP Address from Trackers, and Fraudulent Website Warning. Set Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement to Off. Under Advanced, enable Block All Cookies if you are comfortable re-authenticating frequently, or leave it off for convenience with cross-site tracking prevention handling most tracking.

5

Review App Permissions

Go through Settings, Privacy and Security, and review each category: Photos, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders. Remove access for any app that does not need it for core functionality. For Photos, consider using Limited Access instead of Full Access for apps that only need specific images.

6

Disable Analytics and Advertising

Go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Analytics and Improvements. Toggle off Share iPhone Analytics, Improve Siri, Share with App Developers, and Share iCloud Analytics. Then go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Apple Advertising, and toggle off Personalized Ads. This eliminates most Apple first-party data collection beyond what is needed for basic device operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Apple really collect less data than Google?
Apple collects less advertising-related data than Google, but still collects analytics, Siri voice samples, location data, and iCloud usage patterns. The default settings share more data than most users realize. This guide minimizes Apple data collection.
Will these settings break my iPhone functionality?
Most settings reduce personalization without affecting core functionality. Disabling location for some apps means you may need to manually grant access when needed. Disabling Siri means you cannot use voice commands. Safari cookie blocking may require more frequent logins.
How often should I review these settings?
Review after every major iOS update as Apple sometimes resets or adds new privacy settings. Also review whenever you install new apps to ensure they have only the permissions they need for their core function.
