Open the AT&T app to check your bill. After the app loads (which takes 8-12 seconds on modern hardware), you're prompted to log in. After authentication, you navigate to billing. The app opens an embedded web view, redirecting you to AT&T's mobile website. The mobile website requires a second login. You've now authenticated twice to view information that your carrier already knows about your device.

T-Mobile's app follows a similar pattern. Core features that should be native app functionality — plan details, data usage breakdowns, device upgrade eligibility — frequently redirect to web views that load slowly, display inconsistently, and occasionally time out, returning the user to the app's home screen to start the process over.

For the rare interactions that require the app (like visual voicemail on AT&T), keep it installed but don't expect it to be your primary account management tool. The carriers have collectively demonstrated that building functional mobile applications is beyond their organizational capability — or simply not a priority when customers are locked into 24-month device payment plans regardless of app quality.
